Remix

For my remix, I wanted to try something that I never have tried before. I am a fan of baking, and have baked cookies with my grandma since I was a little kid. One of my favorite desert items is cheesecake, so I thought why not try to combine the two together. So, I made sugar cookie cheesecake bars. I went online and looked up a small cheesecake recipe, and a small sugar cookie recipe. Once I had made the cookie dough I started making the cheesecake filling. After the filling was done, I coated a baking pan with Pam spray and placed half of the cookie batter on the bottom, then I put all of the filling on top of the placed dough, and then placed the remaining cookie dough on top of the filling. Obviously, everything has its flaws and internet culture is not an exemption. There are a lot of things to be afraid of on the internet, but for the internet, the good outweighs the bad. I don’t think that copyright needs to change at all, I think that it works well the way that it is. I’ve chosen the public domain licence because no recipe should be private for just one person to make. My remix came out well, it was really good, there weren’t very many challenges or problems.

Bubble Letter Painting

For this project, I grabbed an old cardboard box and spray painted it black. While the spray paint dried, I went inside and made a stencil for the letters of my name. After I finished making the stencils, I went back outside and put the stencil on the cardboard and spray painted the letters blue. I had fun doing this project, I liked the spray painting the box and sitting in the sun with my dog as the paint dried. This was one of my favorite projects that we have done.

Artist Conversation: Kiyomi Fukui

Artist: Kiyomi Fukui

Exhibition: Apologetic Garden

Media: Plants

Gallery: N/A

Website: http://www.kiyomifukui.com/

Kiyomi Fukui is a printmaking artist. She is a Japanese American artist who lives in Long Beach California. She received an MFA in printmaking from CSULB, and a BFA in Graphic Design form La Sierra University. At the core of her works, Fukui tries to capture the transient intimacy of everyday life.

In her Apologetic Garden set, Fukui art is less about the formal qualities of art and more about the underlying message, literally. In this set, Fukui lets nature create all of the visible work, making the formal qualities vary quite a bit. The sizes of the plants range form small succulents to juvenile trees.

In this set, the content started with a single envelope that had the words “I am sorry” written on it and had seeds placed inside of the envelope. That envelope was then planted in a garden bed and the Apologetic Garden was created. The garden grew with more letters that had seeds in them and an apology written on the top of them.

I like the way that this set turned out. I like the idea that was behind these works. I feel like putting a letter that is filled with seeds saying you’re sorry and planting it in the Earth and letting it grow is a powerful message that is also beneficial to the environment.

Sustainable Art

The idea behind my sustainable art project was to make a cat house out of boxes. I used cardboard boxes, string, and a ping pong ball in order to make the structure. I think it came out pretty well, given we didn’t have very many boxes to work with. I think I was able to express my idea fairly well. I don’t think that my choice of materials influenced my experience very much. A kiss doesn’t have a set time on how long it should last, it all falls under different circumstances that depend on other things. A great meal should last until there is no more food. A work of art should last until its name has been defaced. Ideally a marriage should last til death do you part. A human life should last until the person can no longer take care of themselves and when their goals in life have been fulfilled. I don’t think that because things have a finite time we experience them differently, take the Mona Lisa and Leonardo Da Vinci for example, over 500 years ago, the Mona Lisa was painted, and Da Vinci died 500 years ago, but we don’t idolize his work any more than we did 100 years ago. Clean water, air, and land should be sustainable and long lasting. I don’t think one person can make a difference in a global problem that is as big as Climate Change.

Virtual Art Gallery

In order to meet some artists for my virtual art gallery, I decided to get on minecraft. I hadn’t played minecraft in a while, so I thought that it would be nice to get onto a game that I’ve owned since I was a little kid. I joined a server that I used to be a part of and saw that there were a lot of new people on it. In my gallery, I wanted to show that people can form a nice community in a game. The three artists that I used in my gallery were ARTrujillo, Kuelpanda, and Paco_Aka_Daddy74. The three of them are all in separate parts of the server, but have all helped in making different communities. ARTrujillo lives in a neighborhood in a part of the world that people flattened out. Not too far from ARTrujillo, Kuelpanda made a ski lodge, windmill, saloon, and barn as places that other players can come and hangout and talk to one another. A long ways away form ARTrujillo and Kuelpanda, Paco_Aka_Daddy74 resides. He made a zoo where every animal in the game has their own enclosure. Other players on the server enjoy his zoo because the animals enclosures also resemble the biome that they can be found in. I really like that minecraft can be a wholesome place where people can hangout with one another and build really cool communities.

The most important parts of ARTrujillo’s neighborhood is that many different people with many different build styles all worked together in order to make a neighborhood where they can all help one another out. Not too far from this neighborhood is their community farm and ranch where they all share the same food resources so no one will have to worry about hunting for animals or not having enough food to regenerate.

The highlight of Kuelpanda’s area is that, while it may be small, many people on the server like to come and hangout in this area, with a barn / stable to keep your horses and a saloon and ski lodge for people to sit around and talk to one another.

The best part about Paco_Aka_Daddy74’s area is that he built it all himself. He made this large zoo for everyone to visit and spent a ton of time getting all of the resources and specific blocks from each biome in order to make a really scaled down version of it to make natural habitats for the animals. Every passive mob in the game has a habitat here, and he is going to soon move on to making habitats for the more hostile mobs. The people in the server really like the zoo and help Paco_Aka_Daddy74 find certain biomes that he is looking for in order to improve the zoo.

Vlogging

With my vlog I just wanted to take a look at my old running stuff, and talk about it because it was a huge part of my life that lead me to where I am today. I did accomplish my goal, even though it was a small one. Next time, I would probably try to not move the camera as much and be more clear in what I wanted to say. I don’t think I will vlog again, I am not a fan of talking into a camera and seeing myself in a camera. My favorite youtuber right now is probably penguinz0. I would say that he is my favorite youtuber because he seems more authentic than other people on the platform. I could be a little more professional and not stutter and think so much as I’m talking. Authenticity is how genuine someone is, and how real they are. Performance is putting on a show and being a character rather than being oneself. Authenticity and performance are not really opposites, and they can exist together. You can still put on a show and be yourself, and the way that you are playing a character, some of your own personality can shine through the act. I think that both of the clips you showed of Jennifer Anistion and Jimmy Kimmel are the same amount of performative and authentic. I believe this because they both know that a large crowd is watching them, just not in front of a crowd.

Artist: Mahsa Soroudi

Exhibition: Nature’s Cadence

Media: Photography

Gallery: N/A

Website: http://www.mahsasoroudi.com/

Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mahsasoroudi/

Mahsa Soroudi is a college graduate that specialized in visual communication. She has been to many different Asian countries to learn their respective cultures. She would love to go and look at all of the different local exhibits and works of many local artist if she could find the time to do it. She is very passionate about trying to give smaller artists the exposure that they deserve.

I like this photo because it reminds me of the cabin that my grandparents used to own when I was younger. I love the many different colors of fall in the foreground and the blue sky and mountain range in the background. The black lines look like blinds that cover a window overlooking this view. I really like the warm colors that she captured in this shot.

Her story and ideas about moving from one part of the world to a completely foreign country to better herself and her family is brave and scary. Exploring and learning new parts of the world are fun and exciting and also scary and intimidating. I believe that she is trying to send the message that if you stay strong and know who you are, you can do anything and go anywhere.

Her Nature’s Cadence project and the meaning behind it are very interesting and understandable to me. When I moved into the dorms last year, I felt isolated and had no idea where I was or what was around me in the world. I tried to learn my surroundings as quickly as possible, and I also bought myself a hummingbird feeder to place outside my window because hummingbirds are an important symbol in my family. Tending to the hummingbird feeder made me feel more at home and more relaxed in the dorms because it made me feel like I was at home and with my family.

Automatic Drawing

I enjoyed sitting down and drawing the campus map from memory. I know that there are a few things missing, and that I ran out of room at the top of the paper. I started at lower campus and the dorms that I stayed in last year, and worked my way up to upper campus, where I ran out of room. I feel like I did a pretty good job with it, I clumped up some of the buildings and areas because I am not sure what specific buildings are what. The other part of the activity was interesting, but not as fun for me. I sat down with my younger brother to do the automatic drawing. We were laughing most of the time, but we tried to calm down to do the project the right way.

Artist: Sienna Browne

Exhibition: Product of the Palette

Media: Painting, Sculpture, etc.

Gallery: Black Umbrella Tattoo and Art Gallery

Website: https://www.siennabrowneart.com/

Instagram: @siennabrowneart

Sienna Browne is an undergraduate artist at CSULB who is getting ready to graduate this spring. Her work mostly explores the struggles of her eating disorder and deal a lot with food. More recently, however, she got over her eating disorder and has been focusing on other types of projects. For example, she had a few month long ultraviolet series in which she made 8 foot tall mixed media paintings, and her most recent project is her Nuudles work.

In her works, Sienna uses a lot of lines and colors. With her most recent Nuudles, she uses many new and interesting shapes and sizes that are modeled after sea weed to make interesting and inviting patters with fun and vibrant colors. She uses varying sizes for her canvases. Her work ranges from smaller paintings and drawings to huge, 8 foot tall sculptures and ultraviolet paintings.

The majority of her work is about her eating disorder and how it effected her. It sends a powerful message about how something that many of us take for granted can be a huge part of someone’s life. She wants to take her art and use it to shake up the boundaries of fine and commercial art. She would like to make prints of her Nuudles and put them on surfboards, skateboards, board shorts, swimsuits, and many other fun and interesting canvases that people can purchase and wear.

To me, her art is really intriguing. I love all of the bright and vibrant colors that she uses, but at the same time, some of her art can be about a dark and unfriendly subject. There is something about her art that gets my attention and holds me there. She is very talented, and I would like to see what she does with her art in the future.

Pop Song

Opening

And there I saw, far away

With pretty colors

That’s more vibrant than real life

It’s a whole different type of sight

Such a beautiful view

So I’m walking to brightness

It’s a very long distance

But it’s worth it for the warmth there

Verse

It pulls me in to the warmth

It reminds me of home

I go on to the light

With my heart on my sleeve

This is it the journey

It’s my chance to give in

There’s no way i’ll back down

Cus these are warm horizons

Chorus

I’ll be running, To the colors

Hypnotizing, Captivating

In a hurry, No delaying

Way to distant, Way to pretty

It’s a stunner, Seventh wonder

Mystifying, Enigmatic

Cannot tear my, Eyes away

What a beauty, Giving me warmth

Verse

I’ll be right there in just moments

With my heart out I can promise

I won’t give up it’s too pretty

I will chase you warm horizons

It’s been years since I’ve laid

my own eyes on your hues

I forgot how vivid

they can be anytime

With long strides I’m running

I won’t stop I’m obsessed

It’s no use can’t ignore

Cus these are warm horizons

Chorus

I’ll be running, To the colors

Hypnotizing, Captivating

In a hurry, No delaying

Way to distant, Way to pretty

It’s a stunner, Seventh wonder

Mystifying, Enigmatic

Cannot tear my, Eyes away

What a beauty, Giving me warmth

Verse

For a long time I’ve been close to

Warmth and wonder out from under

It’s my dream to reach the skyline

Satisfied from warm horizons

With a bounce in my steps

I jump up to the skies

I don’t care anymore

I can feel the warmth here

It’s been years since I’ve ran

I can see from here fine

And from bout anywhere

Cus these are warm horizons

In my song, I was thinking about traveling and finding exciting new places to visit that feel magical. The process for writing my song was I made the beat first and then tried to match lyrics with the music that I had made. It was a lot harder than I had expected, it took a lot more time and thought than I had anticipated. I think my song could be somewhat successful with an actual band instead of synthesizers and a program that can be used to have a computer generate vocals with your lyrics and notes. It is possible that I could write another song in the future, but I don’t think I will in the near future. If I were to write another song, I think it might be about how you can never give up no matter what gets in your way, you always need to push through and believe in yourself.
